This tour is specially designed for those who wish to rediscover the extraordinary civilisations of the peoples of Indochina. It begins in Laos, a small country of tropical forests and mountains with the capital of Vientiane, which lies within sight of the Thai border on the Mekong River, followed by Luang Prabang, which is the ancient capital and home of the former royal family. The second leg of the journey is Vietnam, which has 4,000 years of history with Hanoi - the capital known for its shimmering lakes, shaded boulevards and verdant parks, Ho Chi Minh City - a young town with a dynamic spirit, Halong Bay - a world natural heritage site recognised by UNESCO and the Mekong Delta - Vietnam’s rice belt with evergreen paddy fields. Finally explore Cambodia, with a special visit made to the temples of Angkor, one of the world heritage sites. Then make a stop in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, with the National Museum having a fine collection of Khmer works of art and Silver Pagoda, which boasts a floor of solid silver. |
Day 1: Arrival in Vientiane Arrive at Wattay Airport in Vientiane. Pick up and transfer to a hotel. Situated on a bend of the Mekong River, Vientiane is the capital and the biggest city in Laos. A city tour includes Wat Si Saket, one of the oldest and most interesting pagodas in Vientiane, Haw Pha Kaew, a former royal temple and That Luang Stupa, Laos’ national symbol and most sacred site. Day 2: Vientiane - Luang Prabang (B) Transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Luang Prabang, 420km north of Vientiane, listed in 1995 as a UNESCO world heritage site. Luang Prabang has become a tourist attraction because of its 32 historical temples built before the era of French colonisation. A city tour to the former Royal Palace comprises the National Museum, Vat Visun, Wat Sen, Wat Sieng Thong and Mount Phousi with a panoramic view of the city. In the evening, stroll round the night market where visitors can find all kinds of snacks and bargain for hill tribe weavings and woodcarvings. O/N in Luang Prabang.
Day 3: Excursion to Pak Ou (B) Enjoy a full-day boat trip on the Mekong River to holy Pak Ou Caves, full of Buddha images of all styles and sizes. Stop over at the nearby villages of Xang Hai, Thin Hong and Pak Ou. Return to Luang Prabang by boat and proceed overland to the traditional hand-weaving village of Phanom. The rest of the day is leisure for personal pursuits in Luang Prabang. O/N in Luang Prabang.
Day 4: Luang Prabang - Vientiane – Hanoi (B) Before leaving Luang Prabang, visit the Luang Prabang Market. Take a flight back to Vientiane, and then board a connecting flight to Hanoi. Pick up and transfer to a hotel. Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city, boasts tree-lined streets and centuries-old temples. The sightseeing day winds up with a water puppet show, a theatrical genre reflecting the agricultural civilization of thousands of years ago. O/N in Hanoi.
Day 5: Hanoi – Ha Long (B) A morning sightseeing tour features both cultural and historical highlights, comprising the Temple of Literature, the Ethnology Museum, the old quarters and a downtown pedicab ride (1 hour). In the afternoon, drive through the Red River Delta to Ha Long (170km) with stop-overs at ceramic and hand embroidery workshops en route O/N in Ha Long.
Day 6: Halong – Hanoi (B, L) In the morning, board a private boat for a cruise in Halong Bay (5 hours), a world heritage site recognised by UNESCO in 1994. Visit some magical grottoes and relax in the best scenic beauty of Vietnam. Lunch of fresh sea food is served on board. Return to Hanoi (170km). O/N in Hanoi.
Day 7: Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City (B) Transfer to the airport for a short flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Pick up and transfer to a hotel. The rest of the morning is leisure. An afternoon tour round Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Saigon, features the History Museum, the Binh Tay Market in Chinatown, Thien Hau Temple and a lacquer workshop. Late in the afternoon, enjoy sunset on board a tour boat sailing up the Saigon River to the Binh Quoi Tourist Village for a folk show and dinner (optional). O/N in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 8: Excursion to My Tho (B, L) Enjoy a full-day excursion to My Tho, a peaceful town 75km south of Saigon on the bank of the Mekong River. The tour consists of a cruise on the Mekong River, a visit to local homes & orchards, a sampan ride on palm-shaded creeks, a taste of seasonal fruit & honey tea and a performance of traditional southern singing. Lunch of Mekong specialties is arranged. O/N in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 9: Ho Chi Minh City - Siem Reap (B) In the morning, transfer to the airport for a short flight to Siem Reap. Pick up and transfer to a hotel. The majestic temples of Angkor in Siem Reap, which used to be the capital of the Khmer Kingdom from the 10th to the 16th century, have been in the world cultural heritage list of UNESCO since 1993. In the afternoon, visit "Les Artisans D' Angkor - Chantiers Ecoles" and a local market. Then walk up to the top of Phnom Bakheng Hill to enjoy a panoramic view of the western Baray and Angkor Wat at sunset. O/N in Siem Reap.
Day 10: Siem Reap (B) The morning highlight focuses on Ta Prohm, a filming site of Lara Croft's adventures in "The Tomb Raider", and Angkor Thom comprising the Southern Gate, the famous Bayon complex, Elephant Terrace and Leper King Terrace. In the afternoon, visit the famous 12th-century temples of Angkor Wat covering 81 hectares with their five distinctive towers emblazoned on the Cambodian flag. In the evening, a buffet dinner with a presentation of Khmer dancing & music is arranged. O/N in Seam Reap.
Day 11: Siem Reap - Phnom Penh (B) Transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, situated on the banks of the Mekong River where its branches converge (Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac). The rest of the morning is leisure for shopping at the Russian Market (Psah Tuol Tom Poung). An afternoon city tour includes the National Museum with a collection of art sculptures presenting different periods of Khmer history and Silver Pagoda located in the Royal Palace, famous for its 5,000 silver floor tiles and solid gold Buddha statue encrusted with 9,584 diamonds (weighing 90kg).
